Story By Stu Brackney of the Copper Football League
Phoenix, AZ: Adam Richman, CFL (Copper Football League) Commissioner announced that the Glendale Rangers will be coached by Kelly Epley for the 2009 season. “This is a man that players love and opposing coaches respect , as he knows this game and always comes to the field on game day prepared,” noted Richman. “If we are going to attract quality players and produce competitive games on the field each week in our league, then coaches like Kelly Epley will be needed. He is a great asset to our league” Richman added.
Coach Epley is no stranger to the CFL. He joined the Glendale Rangers in the Copper Football league for the 2006/2007 season after taking the 2005 season off. His previous coach experience included 10 years semi pro experience as the Head Coach of the Glendale Bulldogs in 1995, the inaugural season of the Arizona Football League and as the Head coach of the Arrowhead Lunatics from 1996-2004 except for the 2001 season in which he retired the “first time”. He has compiled an impressive 79-12 record with 3 State Championships, 3-runner ups one “Coach of the year” awards and one “Offensive Coordinator of the Year” in his 9 previous years in the AzFL.
In April of 2005 owner Chad Arcaria approached Coach Epley, after his second “retiring” with the idea of heading up a new team in the Copper Football League. In his 1st year with the Copper Football League as Head Coach of the newly formed Glendale Rangers he was part of his 4th state championship and was rewarded with “Coach of the Year” honors for the second time.
Representing the CFL, Coach Epley took his Glendale Rangers to play for a National Championship on December 8th 2006 in Mesquite Nevada. The Rangers drubbed the 2006 Wild West Football Champion of Nevada 36-8 on June 24th 2006 to earn the right to play for the Minor League National Championship Division 2 in December 2006. Victory was again the result as the Glendale Rangers of the CFL won 41-7 to become the Division 2 National Champions 2006!
Coach Epley’s success can be seen in his attitude towards the game and his players. Epley said, “We plan on successfully playing for another Championship next season to realize the goal of being the Champions of the Copper Football League for the 2009 season. We can do this! We expect to do this! Do you want to be a part of it? If you have the commitment, drive and self-confidence of being part of something larger than yourself join this worthwhile movement and contact us about how to be a part of a Championship organization.”
Coach Epley has also coached High School Football and Junior Collage Football in Arizona for the past 26 years. Currently Coach Epley is Head Football Coach: O/D Coordinator at Agua Fria High School where he has been for eight years.
